Between Fuengirola and Marbella we manage four very different kinds of home. They share a coast and little else, so it is worth deciding what kind of stay you want before you start comparing dates.

A villa with its own pool: Reserva del Higuerón

The Reserva del Higuerón is a gated community on the edge of Fuengirola, with 24-hour security and landscaped grounds, a few minutes from beaches, golf courses, restaurants and beach clubs. Both of our villas here look out over the Mediterranean, and each has a pool of its own.

THE ONE has four bedrooms and five bathrooms for up to eight guests. The Luxury Villa with Infinity Pool has three bedrooms and four bathrooms for up to six. Málaga Airport is about 14 kilometres away in a straight line, and the beach is a few minutes by car.

An apartment on the golf course: Los Flamingos and Calahonda

Los Flamingos is a golf resort west of Marbella, with views across the course to the sea and the mountains. Our two apartments there, The Hideaway and Luxury Escape, face the golf course and share the resort's pools. Each has two bedrooms and sleeps up to four, with parking on the premises. Puerto Banús is about 8 kilometres away in a straight line.

Oaks&Thistle in Calahonda is the same idea on a smaller scale: two bedrooms for up to four guests, beside the La Siesta golf course, with the Cabopino and Miraflores courses about five minutes away and three pools in the complex. It sits between Fuengirola and Marbella, the beach is a few minutes by car, and the airport is about 28 kilometres away in a straight line.

A house in a village: Casa Heredia

Casa Heredia is in La Heredia, a whitewashed village in the hills behind the coast, around ten minutes' drive from Puerto Banús and Marbella. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms for up to four guests, an indoor fireplace and access to a shared pool. There are hiking trails close by, and the beaches are within easy reach.

An apartment close to Marbella's beaches: Los Monteros

Los Monteros Retreat is on the eastern side of Marbella, about three kilometres from the town centre and a few minutes from some of its best beaches. It has two bedrooms for up to four guests and parking on the premises. It does not list a pool, so if one matters to you, look at the other homes here.

    Choosing

    • Privacy and a pool of your own: the two villas in the Reserva del Higuerón.
    • Golf at the door: Los Flamingos, or Calahonda for the courses a few minutes away.
    • Quiet streets and walking rather than beach clubs: Casa Heredia.
    • Marbella's beaches on a short trip, no pool needed: Los Monteros.

    When to go

Beach days run from late spring into autumn. Golf and walking are at their best in the cooler months, which on this coast are mild. The villas are made for long summer days by the pool, while spring and autumn are quieter and the best time for golf.
